About us.

Roots is a sustainable agriculture partner, founded on the belief that farming can actively restore soils, capture carbon and increase biodiversity, while still producing the food the world needs.

01
Why we started

Food production sits at the heart of the environment, yet too often it's misunderstood - seen as part of the problem, rather than the solution. At Roots, we believe the opposite can be true.

We started Roots because farming, done well, can be an enormous driver of environmental benefit. Regenerative farming has real potential, but it's become fragmented and, for a lot of growers, alienating. We're here to simplify the transition - turning technical science into practical language, and practical farming into the reporting the market needs.

02
What we've built

We've built Roots One - a single platform where a grower enters their information once, and it delivers whatever each buyer needs: carbon, biodiversity, water and SAI-aligned reporting. It's designed to be used at a kitchen table, not by a consultant, and it works alongside what a farm already does.

It’s built this way, because we’ve sat on both sides. Fifteen years in the grain trade means we understand farming, supply chains and working with growers who know their land better than any model does. We combine that experience with independent science that verifies the numbers and keeps the claims grounded. The result is an approach that works for everyone, without asking farmers to become scientists or scientists to become farmers.

03
Where we're heading

Today, we are delivering verified reporting across the whole farm - measuring the environmental footprint of what is produced, the impact farming has on the land, where it is performing well and where there is room to improve. Each area comes with its own evidence and story, ready to share with customers.

Tomorrow, we want that evidence to do more. To help farmers and their customers make better decisions, track genuine improvement and put a value on better outcomes for carbon, soil, water and biodiversity. Sustainable farming should create commercial value, not simply more reporting.

Ultimately, we want to help create a food system that rewards farmers for improving the environment - making better farming better business, one step at a time.

What we do.

Ask the farm once. Information goes in one place and comes back as reports in whatever format each buyer needs. No grower fills in the same questionnaire twice.

Carbon reported properly. Gross emissions, sequestration and net balance, shown as three separate lines. Never blended into one convenient number.

Five layers of verification. Every carbon figure passes through five layers, finishing with independent review.

Removals are measured, not modelled. Quantified against our own published methodology, independently reviewed, and reported separately from emissions.

Our values.

01
Openess

We believe in transparency - in how data is gathered, how results are shared, and how value moves through the supply chain. Growers and partners should always know what's being measured, why, and how it benefits them.

02
Collaboration

Real change happens when we work together. From growers and merchants to researchers and buyers, we work with the whole chain to create progress that's practical, measurable and lasting.

03
Integrity

We report what's real, not what's flattering. Emissions and removals are kept separate, estimates are never dressed up as measurements, and every figure can be traced back to the field it came from. The numbers are built to be questioned - because the ones that matter are the ones that hold up.

Get in touch

Via our sustainable agriculture strategy, we reduce and even remove emissions via food production and sustainable farm practices.

What we offer.

  • Emissions tracking and reporting in XBRL format.

  • Removals via independent third party.

  • Collaboration, closely linking independent science, growers and consumers.

Josh Dewing
Commercial Director. Founder, Roots Agri.
Co-Founder, Roots Carbon.
Fifteen years in the grain trade. Knows the merchants, the farmers - and how the business actually works.
Josh spent fifteen years trading grain across East Anglia, specialising in malting barley. Roots grew from a simple frustration: farmers doing genuinely good environmental work weren't being recognised or rewarded for it. Roots was built to fix it - collect the data once, on farm, and report it to everyone who needs it. He lives in Norfolk and is happiest in the sea.
Dr Diego Durantini
Technichal Lead.
Co-Founder, Roots Carbon.
Plant scientist. Builds the carbon and climate methodology behind every number.
Diego is a plant scientist with an MBA and more than fifteen years across plant research, business development, ingredients R&D and agritech. He works in plant science at the John Innes Centre, and at Roots he owns the science - the carbon and climate methodology behind every number we report.
